Vonore is a small town positioned in Monroe and Blount counties in eastern Tennessee. Within the boundaries of Vonore is a portion of the Little Tennessee River and Fort Loudon State Historic Park. The town is located 35 miles south of Knoxville and 30 miles west of the North Carolina state border. According to the United States Census Bureau, Vonore had a population of approximately 1,502 people in 2016.
Original inhabitants in the region Vonore is located were Native American peoples. Eventually, individuals of European descent arrived in the region and began building stores, establishing farms, and raising families. In the late 1800s, the Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern Railroad began laying tracks through eastern Tennessee. The railroad established a stop known as Upton Station and three years later an area doctor applied for a post office for the station. Post officials asked the doctor to name the new post office and the name Vonore was chosen. Quickly a community was established and in 1965 Vonore became an incorporated municipality.
Modern-day Vonore is a unique and growing town. Residents of Vonore enjoy its small town, Southern charm, and easy highway access. According to the town’s website, “Boating, Fishing, Hiking and Camping, are just a few of the attractions and sports that can be found in this community.” Despite its small size, there is something for everyone in Vonore, Tennessee.
