Original inhabitants of the land Lenoir City is located on were Native American Indians. Eventually, European and European-American settlers arrived and established themselves in the area, taking control of the land. In 1810, General Lenoir sent his son to settle the plot of land modern-day Lenoir City sits upon. Lenoir was given the land by the State of North Carolina. Following the end of the Civil War, Lenoir’s son died but his grandsons continued developing the land. A company known as the Lenoir City Company was formed in the 1890s and contributed greatly to the growth of the city. By 1907, Lenoir City was an incorporated municipality.
